Ireland in Six Nations Rugby 2011

Six Nations loss to Scotland cost a triple crown to go with the championship lost in Paris. And there was also that record-breaking, nine-try hammering by the All Blacks in New Plymouth. But the wing can find reasons for all that plus the other games that got away from him and his team before and during that summer tour of New Zealand and Australia.

He believes that by hook or by crook Ireland are where they would have wanted to be when, as grand slam champions of Europe, they finished last autumn's series of Tests with a win over South Africa and a draw against Australia. All they have to do now, argues Bowe, is to regain their winning ways, starting with the first international at their spanking new Aviva Stadium tonight.

"We're a side who want to be getting back to winning ways with the World Cup looming," said Bowe this week. "We want to get back to the style of play we had when we were beating the top teams in the world. We know what's at stake and we know they're on the back of a few losses so it's a great opportunity to get another good win against South Africa."

In fact Ireland has made a habit of beating South Africa recently. Once the Springboks brought an aura with them when they came north, but three successive defeats have changed all that and this time Ireland confront a Boks team which finished bottom of the Tri-Nations pile and which has left half its talent back home in the sick bay.

A fourth win would also set Ireland up nicely for Samoa in a week, followed by the All Blacks and finally Argentina. "The summer tour was obviously very disappointing but the players are well over that and we're looking forward to the next stage," says Bowe, one of those players who has flourished under Kidney's particularly gnomic style of leadership. After an on-off start to his Test career in the Eddie O'Sullivan era, the Osprey has been around whenever Kidney has really needed big performances.

Corporate Hospitality Group provides Hospitality for Six Nations 2011

IRISH coach Declan Kidney is more than relieved to have Rory Best's experience on board at the start of the November Test series against South Africa on Saturday.

Best missed the majority of last season due to a neck operation, but he was back on the pitch sooner than expected with a remarkable recovery and played in all three of last season's Six Nations matches.

Best and Munster's Jerry Flannery usually have a battle to see who gets the start for Ireland previously, and while there will always be the arguments associated with that between the fans, Kidney was more than relieved when Best recovered fully from a bang to the head while playing for Ulster recently.

Given Flannery was already ruled out injured, there would have been no arguments that a fully fit Best would be wearing the number two shirt against the reigning world champions.

"Everyone gets picked on merit and you have to go with the management decisions. Sometimes those calls can be close and there can be disappointment, as there is at every team selection," said Best, who will earn his 40th cap this weekend when Ireland officially open the new Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

"They are the World champions and it is the first big Test match at the new stadium. It is not often one of the oldest venues in the world
gets a facelift, so everyone wants to be playing in that first game as well.

"This week there have been disappointments for some players who have not made the cut. For me it is about going out and giving my everything as I do in the Irish jersey, the Ulster shirt or even for Banbridge, when I played for them in the All Ireland League last year as I built up to making my return."

"I have been feeling good, although I needed to go through a ftness test last week after taking a bang to the head against Edinburgh.

"I am happy with the way it has been going this season with Ulster and I am trying to add little bits here and there to my game."

"But the most important game for me is the one against South Africa this week. When that is over, the next important game will be against Samoa.

"The management may well be looking towards the World Cup and there has obviously been some planning going on there already, but for the players it is a matter of just looking ahead to the next game."

He added: "I am looking forward to gettingout there on Saturday, facing the reigning World champions and helping get Ireland back to winning ways."
