I did not have a clue what league was, says new England captain

Growing up in the strictly round-ball sporting environment of Maghull in Liverpool, there were few things further from James Graham's mind than captaining England at rugby league.

"I didn't have a clue what rugby league was," he recalls. Fortunately, what he did have was a father from the stronghold of west Cumbria who had kept his links with the game of his own youth. He offered to take his son to an amateur club in St Helens, to see whether the affinity with the code had been inherited. It had.

"The lads at school said I must be mad, but that was it for me. I was one of seven, so it was a good effort from my dad. He didn't do it, though, so that I could be a professional player or captain my country. It was just something he did for his son."

The England squad in New Zealand for their opening game in the Four Nations tomorrow have reason to be pleased that he did. The loss of Jamie Peacock before departure and Adrian Morley after six minutes of the warm-up match in Auckland means that Graham has, quite unexpectedly, inherited the captaincy for the game against the Kiwis in Wellington.

At 25, it is something of an understatement to say that Graham has limited experience of leadership. He has captained St Helens a grand total of once, at the Catalan Dragons in 2006, although he did lead the England Academy tour to Australia and New Zealand two years earlier.

That trip brought the rare experience of a victory over an Australian Schoolboys side which included, among others, Greg Inglis, and a defeat by the Junior Kiwis, with one of tomorrow's opponents, Manu Vatuvei, in their ranks.

"And he was just as big then as he is now," Graham says. Since then at Saints Graham has played under the leadership of Sean Long and Keiron Cunningham and says he has learnt plenty from them.

Likewise Peacock, who would have led this tour but for a serious knee injury and who has been in touch to offer congratulations. It will be on the template of Peacock's style of leadership by example that Graham will base his approach, although there are some subtle differences.

He is renowned as one of the game's most vocal players, sometimes to the detriment of his relationship with referees. He concedes that he might have to curb that streak of hot-headedness, something that seems to fit neatly with his flame-red hair.

"But nothing much else will change," he says. "I've always had a lot to say in the dressing rooms. Now I'll just have a little 'c' next to my name and I get to run out first."

Rugby: Wales head into French winner-takes-all clash

Wales and France will go into a winner-takes-all clash in Albi on Saturday for the Alitalia European Cup and a place in the 2011 Four Nations tournament to take on England, Australia and New Zealand.

This is after Wales sneaked a 31-30 win over Ireland in a tense match at The Gnoll in Neath on Sunday.

Both sides go into next week’s game with two wins under their belts, turning the concluding group match into an unofficial European Cup final.

Wales didn’t have it all their own way at The Gnoll and it took a late field goal from Lee Briers to give the home side a seven-point cushion going into the final five minutes.

Wales coach Iestyn Harris said: “We’ve used our get out of jail free card if I’m honest. We were a little bit scratchy at times.

“Ireland are a good side and didn’t do themselves justice in France last week.

“But if we keep improving and working on things that we didn’t go too well, eventually we’ll get there and hopefully that’ll be next week.

“But this week we gave ourselves a shot at the game and when we pushed it out to 12-4, we started to look a little bit more comfortable.

“Then the half changed and we were behind at the interval.

The game was finally sealed with 70 seconds remaining on the clock when Ireland’s Tim Bergin fumbled a pass on the wing giving Wales possession that they didn’t lose. And they almost went over for a further try to seal things.

In 1924 the SFU changed its name to become the Scottish Rugby Union. International games were played at Inverleith from 1899 to 1925 when Murrayfield was opened.

Ireland Rugby epresents the island of Ireland in rugby union and competes annually in the Six Nations Championship and every four years in the Rugby World Cup, where they have been eliminated at the quarter-final stage in all but two competitions (1999 and 2007). Ireland is also one of the four unions which make up the British and Irish Lions - players eligible to play for Ireland are also eligible for the Lions.

The Six Nations Championship held every year in February and March is Ireland's only annual tournament. It is contested against England, France, Italy, Scotland and Wales. Ireland was a member of the inaugural Home Nations in 1883 with France and Italy joining later to form the Five and Six Nations respectively. Ireland won their first championship in 1894, winning the Triple Crown also. Ireland's first Grand Slam occurred in the 1948 season and their second in the 2009 season. In total Ireland have been champions on eleven occasions.
